On January 31, a man detained at the Stewart Detention Center in South Georgia died from COVID-19. The man, identified as Felix Montes de Oca Marcelino, was 57 years old at the time of his death. It is no surprise that the conditions of the detention centers are a breeding ground for the virus as this is the fourth COVID related death in an immigration detention center since the pandemic started, however this being the first of which that took place during Biden’s time in office. Due to this, Biden has been urged to stop the use of private prison contractors to detain immigrants. Many see the detention centers as unethical and inhumane as the terrible conditions clearly endanger peoples health. Immigration advocates believe that these private insitutions only take interest in making a profit and do not have an interest in making sure people are being properly cared for. On the bright side, due to COVID, less than 15,000 people are detained, down from the 50,165 that were detained in 2019.

Although many are against the use of these detention centers, there are people who believe detention centers are necessary. For example, some feel as though detention centers ensure public safety and that immigrants will appear in court. Regardless of societies beliefs on the matter, the facts show that the conditions of these centers are detrimental to immigrants health. Advocates are urging Biden to make changes, however he has not made a clear statement on his plans. ICE detention centers have been in use for many years so it may be challenging for Biden to make any major differences.
