Extreme weather – such as heatwaves and droughts – induced by climate change have been taking hold of China recently. A heatwave longer than 70 days has affected more than 900 million people in at least 17 provinces, from Southwestern Sichuan to coastal Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in the East.
So, how has this impacted life in China?
Wildlife has been affected by the drought as well as people. Elephants have been terrorizing farms in search of sustenance causing $1 million worth of damage. This has been linked to the decrease in the area taken up by viable elephant habitats. Fish carcasses have also been washing up in areas that were formerly filled with water.
Due to the extreme weather, China is also experiencing a power crisis. Because of this, China is currently increasing its reliance on coal as a power source, further exacerbating the issue. This power crisis is causing many hardships such as power outages and hits to the global economy. These hits are caused by a cap being put on oil and many Chinese goods.
