In an election that follows former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s resignation, Republican congressman Lee Zeldin continues to close the polling gap between himself and current New York governor Kathy Hochul. While Hochul still maintains a comfortable lead, the margin is starting to close in major polling with Quinnipiac University releasing a poll that shows only a 4 point advantage for Hochul over Zeldin among 1617 likely voters. This is within the margin of error, making this election increasingly a toss-up and following the trend of Republicans increasing their poll numbers in races across the country.
A new Sienna poll also reveals that Zeldin is gaining ground, especially among suburban voters. While 538 continues to maintain a 51.2%-41.6% margin in their polling aggregate, this is likely to change as more polling is done in the closing weeks of the election. The Zeldin campaign is also likely to increase their campaigning efforts along with multiple PACs pouring millions of dollars in an attempt to increase voter turnout and potentially flip a long time Democrat governed state.
