House Passes New Bill

On Thursday, the Republican-led House passed a bill that would prevent transgender athletes from participating in women’s and girls’ sports in federally funded schools and institutions. This bill is unlikely to be passed by the Democratic-controlled Senate and has received a veto threat from the White House.

The Republicans are using this vote to draw attention to the issue, which is part of a larger effort in states across the US to pass similar bills limiting transgender athletes’ participation in sports. The final vote was 219-203 and followed party lines.

The House bill aims to modify federal law to require that only a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth should determine their sex for the purpose of complying with Title IX in athletics, thus barring transgender women and girls from playing on teams according to their gender identity.
