The Life and Controversy of Niccolò Paganini

Niccolò Paganini was perhaps the most skilled violinist of the 19th century. His eccentric and flamboyant playing style and his ability to play difficult pieces with absolute precision revolutionized classical music. This work inspired musicians such as composers Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms.

His music was so advanced many believed his talent came from demonic possession. It was expressed that his music even made men see the devil guiding his hands as he played. This relationship between music and superstition is common in blues and rock music, but Paganini was thought to pioneer this stereotype. These rumors were furthered by his claim that his playing was inspired by a guardian angel.

His lifestyle supported this superstition. He was fond of drinking and gambling. He even had to pawn his violin to pay off a debt. His flexible joints made playing multiple notes at once and making quick note changes easy. There is an infamous story of a concert he played on just one violin string.

His influence as the ‘Devil’s Violinist’ was carried on after his death. His body was rejected to be buried in Genoa, Itaty by the Catholic chruch because of his reputation.
