Why are immigrants moving out of Florida?

Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1718 to counteract the harmful impacts of illegal immigration caused by the federal government’s irresponsible border policy. It makes E-Verify necessary for firms with 25 or more workers, imposes punitive penalties for hiring illegal aliens, and prohibits municipal governments from giving Identification Cards (ID) to illegal foreigners. It also compels hospitals to gather and report statistics on healthcare expenses to undocumented immigrants.Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Strongest Anti-Illegal Immigration Legislation in the Country to Combat Biden’s Border Crisis

Industries Affected the Most by E-Verify Provisions

Construction, Professional, Scientific, Management, Administrative, Waste Management Services, Accommodation and Food Services, Arts, Entertainment, Recreation, Retail Trade Other Services, and Agriculture are the six industries most affected by undocumented workers in Florida. In 2019, these industries employed 391,000 illegal workers and earned $12.6 billion in salaries. According to estimates, undocumented immigrants contribute 7.3% of their income in taxes, amounting to over $923 million in state and local taxes in 2019. With undocumented employees, firms in these industries would retain 10% of their workforce and the salaries they bring, resulting in a $12.6 billion decrease in Florida’s GDP in a year. In addition, farmers must fill jobs rapidly in geographically remote places, making them reliant on a high density of foreign-born migrant labor, which would have a massive influence on one of Florida’s leading businesses, Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing, and Hunting.Florida HB 1617/SB 1718: Potential Economic and Fiscal Impact

How people reacted to bill 1718

Immigration activists gathered in front of the Freedom Tower in South Florida on Thursday to protest Senate Bill 1718, which Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law on Wednesday. Parts of the bill take effect on July 1, 2023, but Miami officials say illegal immigrants and their families are already concerned. According to labor organizers, construction, hotel, and agricultural workers are among the industries where employees are not showing up for work. If detected carrying five or more illegal immigrants or a youngster, they might face felony charges. In addition, employers will be obliged to utilize E-Verify to verify job status, and students who want to practice law will be denied a law license beginning in 2028.‘Slap in the Face’: South Florida Residents Protest New Immigration Law

Title 42

Title 42 was implemented when Former President Donald Trump was in office. This policy restricted migrants to come into the United States during the pandemic and had many restrictions at the border. According to the CDC and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this title was issued to help stop the spread of Covid-19 in the United States. This title allowed the border officials to send back any migrant trying to enter the United States to their home country.

Title 42 is currently the talk around the world because it is set to end on May 11 at 11:59pm. In the United States, Covid-19 has decreased immensely, so the Biden administration is ending the Covid public health emergency, which is a reason Title 42 is also set to end. Many migrants have been camping outside the Mexican-U.S. border waiting for this day to be able to cross the border without any restrictions. There have been thousands of migrants waiting and this has made the United States worry about how they can regulate this. The United States has recommended that these migrants do not cross illegally and apply for asylum online, but of course, that process is not easy and can take years to get accepted to come into the country.

On May 11, after seeing everything that is happening at the border, the Biden administration put new policies into place. The policies are migrants who are caught crossing the border illegally will be deported and not be able to return to the United States for five years. They can also be criminally charged if caught. The Biden administration is trying to find different ways to help these migrants come into the country legally, but he is also focusing on the safety of border patrol agents and the United States.

Pea Aphids: Plant? Insect? Both??

Oftentimes, important scientific discoveries go overlooked by the public. Many important discoveries are simply not relevant to the general public and the attention they get is from academics and researchers. One of these overlooked findings is the discovery of the photosynthetic nature of a little bug known as the ‘pea aphid’. These tiny bugs were discovered to be able to convert sunlight into energy and water and carbon dioxide into oxygen. This is the only animal to be able to do so.

This special property comes carotenoids, which are a type of red-orange pigment that comes from the plants, algae and fungi that animals eat. Carotenoids are essential for functions like vision, bone health and vitamins. However, these little bugs have their own carotenoids.

This was broken down more by body color. The color of aphids changed based on carotenoid production. Aphids in cold environments and green aphids produced high levels of carotenoids. Normal environments and orange aphids produced intermediate levels of carotenoids, and white aphids and aphids in environments with limited resources produced few carotenoids. Researchers believe pea aphids got this ability after swapping genes with fungi.

Endel – Do Focus Soundscapes Really Work?

As the school years come to an end, we say goodbye to long night studying and begin to relax–for me, this means a bunch of reading. I’m sure I could write a full post about my reading habits and routines (and maybe I will), but this week I wanted to review the only soundscape app that’s successfully helped me concentrate, even when it feels impossible.

Endel is a top-rated soundscape application. While there are both paid and free versions, I recently started to listen to their work on Spotify after discovering a massive upload library.

But what exactly is Endel? Endel designed their soundscapes, referred to as Focus, to help people find their focus through the power of sound. Endel says that their Focus soundscapes are “carefully engineered in line with neuroscience and psychoacoustics,” and this isn’t an empty claim. A study published in 2021 showed that Endel’s Focus offers up to a 7x boost in focus and sheds some light on how sounds affect our state of mind.

This study was performed by a data and AI company called Arctop, which examined participants completing various tasks at home or work while listening to Endel, curated playlists, or silence. As their blog post “The Science Behind Focus” explains, “the results showed that participants listening to Endel increased their focus significantly when compared to listening to music playlists or silence. Focus was maintained longer and more consistently while working.”

Endel is a central part of my studying and reading routine and has even made its way into my work routine. My early clock-ins and late clock-outs seem to flow more easily with the gentle sound playing in my headphones, and, unlike music or podcasts, it doesn’t distract me throughout the day. So, if you find yourself struggling to focus while reading (or studying if you’re continuing on for the summer semester), give it a try! It’s free to use, and might just help you stay focused for longer.

The Best Restaurants in Downtown Phoenix

Finding good-quality restaurants can be a challenge at times. Whether you are in Downtown Phoenix for a Suns basketball game, a Diamondbacks baseball game, or just to sightsee, there are many restaurants to choose from. This blog post will give you the 5 best spots to eat in Downtown.

  1. Harumi Sushi
Where To Find The *Absolute* Best Sushi & Japanese Food in Phoenix - American Eats

Harumi, a favorite downtown Phoenix restaurant and the greatest local sushi establishment, is a perfect date night destination. They fly in the fish every day, so you know it’s top-notch. Order anything with bluefin tuna, whether in the shape of sashimi, nigiri, or a roll, for fatty, fresh fish perfection. Most adore the smart balance of sweet and spicy on the crunch mango roll for a more unusual roll.

2. The Larder and the Delta

The Larder + The Delta - Downtown - Phoenix - The Infatuation

The Larder and the Delta is a newcomer that is fast establishing itself as one of downtown Phoenix’s more prominent eateries. It is a Southern-inspired restaurant that takes bold creative liberties with unorthodox interpretations of classic dishes. The menu rotates periodically, but cauliflower is always available and a good place to start. It has all the tastes of a buffalo wing without the real wing, with a light coating of locally created Cutino hot sauce and topped with melted smoked bleu cheese and pickled celery. When it comes to entrees, order to your taste depending on what’s in season and trust that they know what they’re doing in the kitchen!

3. The Arrogant Butcher

The Arrogant Butcher Happy Hour | Downtown | King of Happy Hour

It is suggested to follow the name’s lead and go for the meats. Begin with the hot tomato sauce and ricotta cheese meatballs served on toasted garlic ciabatta bread, and soak up every last bit of sauce with your bread. If you’re looking for anything other than meat, the soft pretzels with cheese fondue are a good choice. And, believe us when we say, order the meatloaf as your main course. While meatloaf isn’t the most interesting food on the menu, it’s the most popular entrée here for a reason! This meatloaf is delicate, savory, and anything from dull thanks to its gooey brown sugar-tomato glaze.

4. Cibo

Cibo Pizzeria | Downtown Phoenix | Pizza, Italian | Restaurant

Cibo distinguishes itself from other downtown Phoenix restaurants by providing a dining experience that is unlike anything else in the city or the desert. It feels far removed from the city, tucked into a peaceful part of the city, with a tree-filled, shady terrace. Cibo specializes on wood-fired pizzas and serves other Italian staples including charcuterie, bruschetta boards, and pasta. The wood-fired pizzas here are all fantastic, with a fluffy crust, terrific sauce, and high-quality toppings, so order what you like, but the Salsiccia with marinara sauce, mozzarella, and housemade Italian sausage is an easy favorite.

5. Cornish Pasty

Cornish Pasty Company: Elegant and delicious hot pockets - Arizona PBS

This place is widely loved by all people who reside in Arizona! There are multiple locations, but the Downtown location has an upstairs, a downstairs, and a basement. The downstairs part of this restaurant is more of a family style, the upstairs and basement are very bar feel. There are pool-tables and darts to play while you wait! The pasty that is always recommended is the French Dip! The Tandori Wings are also a hit! Check it our for a fun experience!

Peloton Recall

Peloton is recalling 2.2 million exercise bikes with model number PL01 that were sold in the U.S. between January 2018 and May 2023 due to safety concerns with the bike’s seat post breaking and detaching during use. There have been 35 reported incidents, including 13 users suffering from injuries such as broken wrists, lacerations, and bruises. Consumers are advised to stop using the bikes immediately and contact Peloton for a free repair, which includes a free seat post for self-installation. This is the second time in two years that Peloton has recalled its equipment. In a previous incident earlier this year, Peloton was fined $19 million for failing to report a known defect in its Tread+ exercise machines, which resulted in more than 150 reported incidents of injuries or deaths.

An Addition To The Presidential Candidacy

On Wednesday in Boston, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced his candidacy for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. The 69-year-old Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and known anti-vaccine activist, claimed to be a truth-teller who will unite rather than divide. He is the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and the son of Robert Kennedy, a former US attorney general and presidential candidate who was assassinated in 1968. His entry into the primary race puts him alongside self-help guru Marianne Williamson, with President Joe Biden expected to enter the race as the clear front-runner.

Turkey and Syria earthquake

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported over 11,000 aftershocks as of March 1, which are expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Additional disaster events have made the response difficult and pose challenges for a timely and effective recovery. UNOCHA’s April 20 Turkey Earthquake Situation Report noted that difficult weather conditions, such as heavy rain and flooding, strong winds, and increasingly hot weather, pose additional challenges to the humanitarian response.2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake

How many victims

The crisis has touched 18 million people in Turkey and Syria, killing 55,000, injuring 130,000, and displacing millions. Ten million people require immediate assistance.
Due to the destruction of cities around the area, millions of people in Turkey and Syria desperately need humanitarian assistance. People are battling to access primary healthcare, with barely one out of every seven health clinics even half operational. In addition, children are becoming increasingly exposed to exploitation, abuse, and family separation due to the loss of safe homes and access to education. Flooding caused by heavy rains six weeks after the earthquake exacerbated the misery of vulnerable households. According to World Vision’s Syria response director, Johan Mooij, Syrian and Turkish children and families are being uprooted once more as cars, houses, and tents drown in polluted waters, leaving them with nowhere safe or warm to sleep.2023 Turkey and Syria earthquake: Facts, FAQs, and how to help

U.S. might run out of cash by June 1st

At the start of the new month, Janet L. Yellen, Treasury Secretary, said the U.S. might run out of cash by June 1st. I don’t think many people anticipated this, and are questioning, can this happen? Running of cash means the U.S. might have issues paying their bills which will cause many economic issues for our country. Another question being asked is what can we do to avoid this from happening?

In the New York Times article, Alan Rappeport and Jim Tankersley wrote, Congress is suggesting President Biden raise or suspend the debt limit to avoid this national matter escalating. The increase in government spending has been a cause of this issue and President Biden, the House, and the Senate are trying to agree to a deal to avoid this issue from actually happening. President Biden is having a meeting on May 9th with Speaker Kevin Mccarthy and other lawmakers to try to resolve this before the United States faces a financial crisis. In the political aspect, both the Republicans and Democrats have come up with different ideas and proposals that can try to get this resolved, but the Republicans don’t agree with the Democrats’ proposal and vice versa. New York Times Article

All the pressure is on President Biden because will be the one deciding what the United States will do to avoid running out of cash. The United States has never failed to pay off its debts or interests, so this matter occurring is making many people worry about what can happen. Biden is currently opposing the idea of raising the debt limit because he believes it will hurt many working families and be challenging for them to be able to pay off their debts. All in all, it is important to think about the economic aspect as a whole and really see what will benefit the country and its citizens without going into a financial crisis. Forbes Article

Despite its influence in society, not much progress has been made reducing the Gender Gap.

The ‘Gender Gap’ is a term used to explain the differences between men and women in economics, health, education, and social status. The gender gap is usually associated with salary differences between men and women but can be applied to anything that deals with resource distribution. While the phrase ‘gender gap’ hasn’t been around for a long time, the acknowledgement of the differences in status of men and women is not new. The first-time wage differences between genders were widely discussed was in the 1860s. Feminist movements took to the street with signs reading ‘Equal Pay for Equal Work’ and feminist newspapers like ‘The Revolution’ published articles about salary differences. Unsuccessful bills like ‘Prohibiting Discrimination in Pay on Account of Sex’ proposed in 1944 and successful bills like the ‘Equal Pay Act’ passed in 1963 all gained public support, but the wage gap persisted.

Equal distribution of resources is a major problem that the world’s leading industrialized nations haven’t resolved. The United States, Canada, Italy, Russia, China, and other G20 countries don’t even come in the top 10 countries who have reduced the gender gap. Countries who have made progress on reducing the gap range from Iceland to Rwanda.

Since the world’s leading powers are not actively working to reduce the gender gap, there has not been much progress achieving fair wages for women. Overall, the smallest wage gap is between women and men aged 25-34. Women in this age group make 92 cents for every dollar a man makes. Wage gaps worsen when race and class is involved. Moreover, the wage gap does not account for gender-based underemployment or unpaid domestic labor women endure.
