Texas Tries To Stop Abortion Pills

Texas has put a ban on abortion that went into effect on September 1, 2021. This law prohibits abortion for any woman who is  six weeks or more pregnant. Many are outraged because of this law due to the fact that many women do not even know that they are pregnant until after six weeks. This has led women to search for another alternative.  One of these options is the abortion pill which is Mifepristone which will stop the pregnancy from growing. Then after taking that pill you have to take Misoprostol which needs to be taken within forty-eight hours after the first pill. That will allow the pregnancy to abort.

Texas is trying to impose criminal penalties on the transfer of abortion pills. Mexico has been sending these pills to women in Texas because there is no law in Mexico against abortion. Unfortunately, the law in Texas does not provide an exception for rape or incest pregnancy. This is what is causing women to buy the abortion pill or travel to a state that will perform the procedure.

People are angry because they feel that the government is trying to control a women’s body and her destiny. Abortions have been happening for years and will continue to happen. The law makers in Texas believe that by banning abortion women will try harder to not get pregnant. However, we should focus on women’s safety and if that means abortion it should be done under a doctor’s care.

Donors Have Pledged to Help Afghanistan Population in Need

The United Nations warned on Monday at a conference in Geneva that millions of Afghans, including children, are on the verge of hunger and might die before winter. António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, encouraged the international community to help Afghans suffering from poverty, which has risen since the Taliban seized power in August.

Many Afghans had to flee their homes when the fighting escalated in August. It is estimated that 3.5 million people are displaced within Afghanistan. Due to closed businesses and trade, families lost their source of income. Prices have increased on the local market, forcing countless Afghans to skip meals, unsure of how or when they would be able to purchase their next meal. With the severe drought and the impending winter, Afghans are vulnerable suffering from starvation and homelessness.

Mr. Guterres said that “after decades of war, suffering and security, they face perhaps their most perilous hour.” Afghanistan’s economy has collapsed as a result of depending on international aid. With the Taliban in power, there’s little money circulation in the country. Hospitals that rely on foreign nations for healthcare essentials and maintenance experienced staffing and medicines shortages following the evacuation of international aid workers. Banks have closed, the International Monetary Fund has temporarily halted payments, and the United States has frozen Afghanistan government assets in the U.S., preventing the Taliban from accessing any funds.

Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken defended the Biden administration’s decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. Stating that there was no indication the country would stabilize even if the United States remained longer and continued to support Afghanistan, the result would have been the same.

Afghanistan’s empty seat at the U.N. Conference room

The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, pledged $68 million to Afghanistan’s immediate assistance, France donated $118 million, China offered $31 million, and Palestine delivered supplies. In total, “donors pledges more than 1billion” expected to arrive through international organizations already working in Afghanistan. The U.N. emphasized the significance of collaborating with the Taliban for humanitarian relief in need. Now, it’s up to the Taliban’s commitments to ensure the safety of aid workers and the deliveries of food and supplies to reach Afghans in need.

Even though the aid package will not solve all the problems in Afghanistan, the international community hopes the donations will ease food shortages. As for Afghanistan’s economy to flourish, the Taliban will need to demonstrate to the international community that they can govern their country effectively while respecting human rights.

An Inevitable Battle Over Vaccination Mandates

President Joe Biden announced a plan last Thursday, September 9th, mandating vaccination for over 80 million private sector workers, in addition to several million more federal employees. The legal foundation for this mandate remains disputed, and the announcement has proven to be predictably divisive.

The plan would involve the issuance of a rule from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requiring that all businesses with 100 or more employees ensure their workers are either vaccinated or tested weekly for COVID-19. In a sense, the rule actually mandates weekly testing, with an exception for vaccinated employees. To avoid the financial burden of weekly COVID testing, many businesses may choose to require vaccination in all employees – thereby causing businesses to impose an explicit mandate in ways that the federal government may not be able to.

The plan drew backlash from political opponents, citing past statements from President Biden claiming that he does not believe he has the Constitutional authority to mandate vaccination. Some states and businesses have already vowed not to comply with the mandate, intending to challenge its Constitutionality in court.

Vaccination mandates remain an especially controversial and divisive concept.

There are numerous Constitutional questions raised by this announcement – such as separation of powers, administrative procedures, and interstate commerce – and challenges from political opponents were inevitable. Now, the Biden Administration will be forced to defend its decision in court, which may require evidence of a grave risk to the health of workers.

As with any policy decision, the consequences of a potential legal battle may be both political and practical.

The Ending of America’s Longest War: What’s Next?

A glimpse of the abandoned U.S. and Afghan military equipment rendered unusable as part of the U.S. withdrawal.
A glimpse of the abandoned U.S. and Afghan military equipment rendered unusable as part of the U.S. withdrawal.

The United States completed its’ full withdrawal of troops on August 30th, 2021 and brought to a close a 20 year war that cost thousands of lives and trillions of dollars. The dramatic final chapter of what Biden called the “Forever War” seems like a fitting end to an otherwise messy, morally ambiguous, and complicated relationship between the United States and Afghanistan.

But even after a war full of government mismanagement and unnecessary lives lost, the consequences of the past 20 years have yet to come into fruition. In the meantime, Afghanistan is still trying to find its’ identity under Taliban rule. Some have claimed that the Taliban of today are different from the Taliban of the late 1900’s. They are more organized, politically savvy, and technologically advanced. Even so, the Taliban have not changed their fundamental beliefs about Islam and its’ strict control over the lives of women. Human’s and women’s rights have remained a key concern of activists. Even with the Taliban’s “promise” to let girls attend school, in practice, there is no indication that any such concession is taking place.

The United States now faces a completely different set of problems. Namely, how the changing regime in Afghanistan affects United States’ national security in the long run. The Taliban have been adamant that they will not be a terrorist threat to the United States but were quick to break their ceasefire agreement with the Trump administration. In addition, the United States has a much smaller military presence in the middle east and may not be as capable when it comes to identifying and stopping terrorist threats from abroad.

President Biden gives speech at the White House defending the chaotic military withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

The next few months will be a critical period in Afghanistan that will likely set the tone for many years to come. Whatever that future may be it is sure to have implications not only in the Middle East but around the world.

The Texas Abortion Law Sparks Anger Throughout the Country

The Texas abortion law S.B. 8, also known as the “Texas Heartbeat Act”, was placed to take affect September 1, 2021. The act criminalizes abortion in Texas after six weeks of pregnancy unless the mother’s life is in danger. However, many women fail to realize pregnancy during that given time. An issue that contributes to the anger this act brought about to the American people.

Abortions are a result of rape or incest in many cases. The governor of Texas claims there will be a push to “eliminate all rapists” when questioned about the fairness of the act regarding rape victims. More often than not, it takes time for the victim to overcome physical and emotional trauma making it harder for a pregnancy to be detected. According to the CDC, rape-related pregnancies are experienced by almost 3 million women. This raises the question of human rights towards women as men are trying to give input on what they are allowed to do with their bodies. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez disagrees with the Texas Heartbeat Act as she claims that, “None of this is about supporting life. What this is about is controlling women’s bodies and controlling people who are not cisgender men“.

An outburst of anger on news platforms and social media since the Texas’ ban began.

To illustrate how insane a 6-week abortion ban is: I did IVF and still did not know I was pregnant until 4.5 weeks. That’s LITERALLY as early as you can possibly know and that’s when you are PAYING someone to put an embryo in your body on a specific day and keep track of it.

Lucy Huber September 1, 2021

Individuals are now allowed to sue providers and those who helped with an abortion process after the stated six weeks. An award of $10,000 is issued to be granted for a successful lawsuit. Multiple anti-abortion activists are now sending tips in order to stop any abortions from happening. This leaves Americans to question the possibility of the situation being reversed on the opposite sex. Would making mandatory reversible vasectomy’s be a possible equivalence to this abortion ban?

Mental Health: More Important Than Any Gold Medal

Simone Biles at 24-years-old has already won 4 Olympic gold medals and 19 world championship gold medals. She is considered by many to be the greatest gymnast of all time and many, if not everyone, expected her to continue her domination in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. However, in one of the biggest surprises of the event, the star gymnast withdrew from the floor exercise, vault, and the uneven bars. Team USA Gymnastics issued statements only saying that Biles had withdrawn from the events but later, in another statement, stated that the gymnast was withdrawing to focus on her mental health.

Ana Marie Cox: Simone Biles withdraws from Olympics team final after vault miss, proving she's the GOAT

The actions taken by Simone Biles this past week have put the issue of mental health at the forefront of the nation’s mind. It’s an issue which sadly, is not often talked about and not often understood. Nowhere more is this highlighted by the people (while seemingly few and far between), who have chosen to condemn the gymnast for withdrawing. Fortunately, the issue of mental health awareness is slowly becoming more prominent as high-profile celebrities and athletes have taken action to bring awareness to it. Athletes such as Kevin Love, Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, and many more are taking what used to be considered taboo, and spreading more awareness to it. Some have even gone as far as to start charities and promote movements to spread knowledge about the issue.

In a tweet that can be applied to much more than just gymnastics, Biles stated, “the outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before.” Hopefully, as time goes on, people will become more and more comfortable opening up about mental health and realize, like Biles, that they are much more than their accomplishments.

The Delta Variant: We Aren’t Out of the Woods Yet

COVID-19 cases are once again seeing a rapid increase in numbers across the country. While much of this is being attributed to the much more contagious Delta variant, some are arguing that the actual underlying cause is “vaccine hesitancy” among the general population. With almost 7 months of 2021 in the books, it is safe to say that most people in the United States have been given ample opportunity to receive the shot. Yet, the numbers show that only 49% of the eligible U.S. population has been vaccinated. Why is this though? Common reasons include general distrust of the vaccine, lack of trust in the government and the institutions administering the vaccines, many not seeing COVID-19 as a real threat, and a variety of conspiracy theories that have been widespread across social media and the internet.

Covid-19 | New Scientist

While it is completely unreasonable to expect the entire population to go out and get the vaccine, the issue understandably causes frustration. The solution to the pandemic and to a return to normal life seems to be within grasp yet many are still hesitant. One half of the country trusts the vaccine while the other half doesn’t or seems to be completely indifferent to it altogether.

This hasn’t stopped some businesses from taking matters into their own hands. The NFL, America’s most popular sports league, recently came out with regulations stating that teams that are unable to play games due to COVID-19 outbreaks could face having to forfeit games as well as financial losses for individual players. New York’s mayor has even gone as far as to urge businesses in the state to require employee vaccinations, a practice which is becoming more commonplace among companies across the country and which is fully permitted according to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

It will be interesting to see, as time goes on, whether these types of business-wide mandates will cause a positive shift in the number of the American public being vaccinated or whether those who are hesitant to get the vaccine will remain that way.

Social Media Companies Under Fire for the Spread of Covid-19 Misinformation

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most difficult problems to address has been the rampant spreading of misinformation. One need to only look across any one of the frequently used social media sites to see a wide array of differing opinions and contradictory information about COVID-19 and the vaccines introduced to prevent it. The Biden administration has been especially critical of one of the largest social media platforms, Facebook, Inc., for their failure to address incorrect claims. When asked about the problem last Friday, President Biden put it bluntly when he said “[t]hey’re killing people.”

In response, Facebook issued a statement accusing the Biden administration of distorting the facts to which U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy countered by saying that, while Facebook and other social media companies were taking steps to address the problem, they need to do more.

Social Media: Make It Part of Your Marketing Toolbox - By Chris Carroll - Golden

The accusations put Facebook and other social media companies in a peculiar situation. Many of them have already been blasted by the previous administration and the public for suppressing political information that the companies find objectionable. Republican state lawmakers have even pushed for a bill that would allow social media censorship lawsuits, the type of which are currently not permitted under federal law. Furthermore, research shows that roughly three-quarters of the American public believe that social media sites intentionally censor certain political viewpoints which only further shows the general distrust and frustration that people are having with these influential companies.

Regardless of the actions taken by the social media companies, it will likely result in a large amount of the populace being upset. Either they allow people to post whatever they want or they give in to the President’s plea to crack down on the spread of misinformation.

Protests in Cuba Spark Foreign Policy Debate

On Sunday, protests erupted throughout Cuba as activists marched against the dictatorial communist regime. Economic turmoil, together with the effects of covid, have left the residents of the country in a dire situation, only worsened by the oppression of their totalitarian government. Cuba is famous for its repression of dissidents, and these protests, the largest in decades, have demonstrated this truism once again, as protestors are bitterly suppressed and quickly arrested by government authorities.

It remains to be seen how exactly the U.S government will respond to these new developments. Republicans are quick to voice their support for the protestors and urge President Biden to take action in some way against the communist regime. For instance, given reports of the Cuban government disrupting internet access in an attempt to shut down communications amongst activists, Governor Ron Desantis of Florida has suggested taking action to increase the amount of internet access provided by outisde sources. Democrats, meanwhile, are arguing that the time has come to end U.S sanctions against Cuba, which they believe has negatively affected the wellbeing of Cuban citizens while doing nothing to topple the communist government. Republicans, on the other hand, joined by several prominent democrats, such as Bob Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign relations committee, argue that such action would be a gift to said government, relieving the pressure and giving the totalitarian regime an opportunity to placate its citizens without seeing any meaningful change.

Of course, as with many foreign policy debates, the impact of political calculations cannot be overstated. Republicans have carried the large battleground state of Florida in the past two presidential elections, and in 2020, former President Trump won the majority of Cuban-American voters in the state, partly due to his strong stance against the Castro regime and against socialism in general. These results are undoubtably a consideration for President Biden and Democrats at large, especially considering the upcoming senate election in which Dems hope to unseat incumbant Cuban-American senator Marco Rubio, who’s already come out strong against Biden’s lack of action in this instance.

Biden Administration’s New Policy for Detention of Undocumented Pregnant, Nursing, and/or Postpartum Immigrants

The Biden administration recently eased restrictions of ICE practices, blocking the detention of undocumented immigrants who are pregnant, nursing, and/or postpartum. The new policy asserts that, “except in special circumstances where a woman’s detention is mandatory, expectant mothers and those who have given birth up to one year previously will not be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)” (Ainsley, 2021). In the event that such immigrants are detained, the policy mandates that “immigration officials should monitor and ensure they receive medical attention, mental health services and pre- or postnatal care” (Subramanian, 2021).

ICE previously abstained from detaining undocumented, pregnant immigrants; however, under the Trump administration, hardline immigration policies reinstated the practice. Of one of President Biden’s shelters for unaccompanied migrant children, whistleblowers contend poor care ranging from “being watched over by contractors with no Spanish-language skills or experience in child care” (Ainsley, 2021). The Biden administration is also using family detention centers as “staging areas” while awaiting court appointments. The newly instated policy on the detention of undocumented immigrants who are pregnant, nursing, and/or postpartum maintains such use of detention centers for pregnant immigrants and their children.

Senior Staff Attorney with the National Prison Project of the ACLU, Eunice Cho, declared:

This action by the Biden administration is a welcome step in the right direction. This move brings us closer to more humane treatment by ICE of people who are pregnant, postpartum, or nursing. ICE should stop detaining or arresting people who would be at particular risk in detention, must implement robust oversight of detention facilities, and ensure the release of all people who would be particularly vulnerable in detention.

– Eunice Cho, Senior Staff Attorney with the National Prison Project of the ACLU
