America’s Forgotten Debt

Over the past years, there has been a growing movement of advocacy surrounding the social injustices and oppression faced by African Americans. While many are very vocal about the social injustices of our world, some are often much more hesitant to discuss the economic disparities faced by African Americans and, more specifically, the government’s role in absolving them. The federal government not only played a large role in the creation of the racial wealth gap, but also its upholding over the last several centuries. Following 246 years of slavery, the fight for economic equality for African Americans has been combatted by a shameful system of oppression, including Congress’s poor handling of the Freedman’s Savings Bank, the destruction of Tulsa’s Greenwood District, Jim Crow Laws, the disclusion of African American veterans from the GI Bill, redlining, and many others racist skeletons that America hides in its historical closet. Reparations were never made for freed slaves—in fact, they were only made for the nation’s slave owners. Gen. Sherman’s famous promise of “40 acres and a mule” that would have redistributed nearly 400,000 acres of land to freed slaves was overturned by President Johnson (Merida). Under President Lincoln, slave owners were paid $300 per freed slave as compensation for their loss of income (National Archives). Martin Luther King calculated that, if America had kept its promise of 40 acres and a mule, it would have been worth $800 billion in the 1960s (Conover). Today, estimates of this promise’s worth range from $6.4 to upwards of $59 trillion (Rancourt). This amount, of course, is unrealistic to demand of the federal government, but it illustrates a greater point; because of their involvement in the creation of this wealth gap, it undoubtedly falls upon the shoulders of the federal government to help alleviate it, and the best way to combat this widespread issue is through a guaranteed minimum income of $1000/month, whose recipients are determined by the cost of living in their respective locations.

A guaranteed minimum income, or G.I., is similar to a universal basic income, which has been gaining traction among voters in recent years. Though the two programs are closely related, they are not identical. While a UBI provides federal payments to all, G.I. targets people who are living below the poverty line and who have inconsistent or no income. It provides cash payments to specific, targeted communities with the express goal of diminishing income inequality. Compared with UBI, funds are more effectively and deliberately invested into poorer, disproportionately Black communities in order to fight the racial income gap that has remained stagnant for many years.

One of the main concerns surrounding a G.I. is that, if a person’s income increases, they may suddenly make too much to qualify for the welfare benefits on which they rely. At a certain point, there is no incentive to increase your income out of fear of losing your benefits. To combat this, a set income amount will not be set at the federal level. Deciding who qualifies for G.I. is dependent upon the cost of living in the recipient’s county. If a person’s income is below the cost of living in their specific area, they qualify for the full $1000/month. However, instead of cutting receivers off if they make anything above that amount, there would be a phase-out rate of 60%. For every additional $1000 that a person makes above the annual cost of living, their monthly check would decrease by $50, or $600 annually. This way, people who are experiencing an increase in income can gradually wean off of their federal dependency rather than losing it all at once. There is still incentive to earn more as there will never be a drastic loss of welfare benefits.

Establishing a G.I. would do tremendous things for the racial wealth gap, as it strives to lift those in poverty, a demographic that is disproportionately Black. In 2019, while the poverty rate for white Americans was only 7.3%, the rate for Black Americans was a staggering 18.8%. According to the 2019 U.S. Census, “the share of Blacks in poverty is 1.8 times greater than their share among the general population,” representing 23.8% of the poverty population but only 13.2% of the general population (Creamer). Some economists predict that providing $1000/month to impoverished Americans would reduce the poverty rate of Black Americans from 23.8% to roughly 1% (Ghenis). The benefits of government payments to Americans have become apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of stimulus checks. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recalled his aggressive advocacy for a stimulus bill, saying that, if it hadn’t been for the checks, “[the pandemic] would have been so much worse,” (CBS). The COVID relief bill put money in the hands of the people who desperately needed it and, as a result, spent it all, stimulating the economy.

Though establishing a G.I. may initially seem like a colossal expense to the U.S. government, this would not be the case. A G.I. could take the place of many anti-poverty programs, including food stamps ($76 billion),  housing assistance ($49 billion), and the Earned Income Tax Credit ($82 billion), that annually cost around $1 trillion, far exceeding the cost of establishing such a program (Lant). It could also be funded by implementing a value-added tax of 10% on the goods and services that a company produces, likely generating between $700 and $800 billion in annual revenue (Gale). A value-added tax would be limited to firms whose gross receipts amount to over $200,000, exempting a large majority of America’s small businesses.

The federal government has long abandoned the economic needs of African Americans, and the reparations made to this historically abused, dehumanized, and exploited population have been both minimal and ineffective. After centuries of this massive, stagnant disparity, it is time that the U.S. takes responsibility for the consequences of its long, oppressive history. A guaranteed minimum income puts money directly into the hands of the people who need it most, fighting not only against the racial wealth disparity but poverty as a whole.

End of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month but Nowhere Near the End of the Fight

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, where organizations across the globe bring attention to the burden that too many have to carry: pediatric cancer. People “Go Gold” this month to show support in honor of the gold ribbon that represents childhood cancer. As September comes to an end, reflecting on what this month entails is essential. People post on social media, host events, donate to research funds, and wear the gold ribbon. These efforts go a long way and they truly do make a difference in bringing awareness to this disgusting disease. But unfortunately none of this will ever be enough to find a cure.

There are hundreds of types of cancer. Not a single one of them has a cure. The only way to be cured of cancer is through treatments. There are various ways to treat cancer. Surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, clinical trials, and other medical treatments. These are all highly invasive, causing acute and chronic side effects to the body. For doctors and scientists to research in hopes of finding a cure, they require tremendous amounts of funds. The National Cancer Institute is a government agency dedicated to this. It was given a $6.44 billion budget in 2020. Only about 250 million dollars of that budget was dedicated to all types of pediatric cancer. That is only 4%.

Only 4% of funds are for all children battling brain cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and the list continues. Do other types of cancer affecting adults also need funding? Of course. There is a lack of funding dedicated to the NCI overall. But our children are our future. Our children are the ones who will grow up to be doctors, nurses, and scientists, and ultimately they will be the ones to find us the cure. Everyday at least 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. The number of diagnosis’s is on a steady rise. We must save our children.

via Little Warrior Foundation

Federal tax money goes towards a countless number of spending areas. A few of the examples are highlighted in the above chart. Cancer impacts our society far more than a submarine or a spaceship ever will. Throughout history, legislation has made very few strides toward research for a cure, and politicians rarely prioritize this disease. Many people choose to ignore this crisis because it does not affect them.

It is easy to ignore the many tragedies in the world. Wars, starvation, climate change, and discrimination often seem like issues too big to take on. But advocating and using your voice can impact many people, creating a ripple effect. Talking about topics that can be hard to talk about is what makes real change.

Cancer is easy to ignore until it comes into your life somehow. It does not discriminate. It is the biggest bully known to mankind. This battle for a cure is nowhere near an end. But we will get a few steps closer with more than 4% funding, spreading awareness, and showing a little more compassion.

This post is dedicated to Ella Bresee (2007-2022). Ella lost her battle with brain cancer this month. If we all lived like Ella, the world would be much better. Fly high, angel.

Russia set to annex occupied Ukrainian regions post-staged referendums.

A man casts his ballot during the first day of a referendum on the joining of Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine to Russia, at a polling station in Moscow, Russia September 23, 2022. Photo by Alexander Avilov/Moscow News Agency via Reuters

The Western international community has stated that these referendums are illegal and will not be recognized as de jure Russian territory. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg denounces the “sham referendums” as “a new escalation of Putin’s war”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the results of the referendum stating “This farce in the occupied territories cannot even be called an imitation of a referendum.”

Ukraine has declared the 4 organizers (Volodymyr Vysotsky, “head of the Central Election Commission of the DPR”; Olena Kravchenko, “head of the Central Election Commission of the LPR”; Oleksandr Kofman, “head of the Public Chamber of the DPR”; and Maryna Filipova, “adviser to the head of the Luhansk People’s Republic”) as criminal suspects. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk states that “Some lawyers believe that those actions fall under Article 110 part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, ‘Infringement on Ukraine’s territorial integrity,’ punishable with a prison term of up to five years.”

There are two main reasons cited for the referendums’ illegality:

• They are organized by Russian installed regional governors after ousting Kiev appointed government officials.

• The 1996 Ukrainian Constitution’s Article 73 states that any referendum vote regarding the de jure status of Ukrainian territory should allow all eligible Ukrainians voters to decide on the matter.

The West also cites the that any vote held under military occupation should be considered fraudulent as the duress of the situation is highly unlikely to produce genuine results resembling the true will of the people. Most often cited is election officials going door-to-door in apartment buildings with soldiers escorting them. Below is an image from an apartment building surveillance camera depicting this.

It is likely that these referendum votes are not meant to legitimize these regions as part of the Russian Federation in the eyes of the West, but in the eyes of the Russian people to maintain domestic support for Russia’s military operations. Russia also stated that after annexation, it would consider Ukrainian attacks on these 4 regions as attacks on Russian soil, justifying military escalation.

Jeffrey Dahmer Taking over the Internet with New Netflix Series

On September 21, 2022, Netflix released a mini-series called Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story with 10 episodes telling the story of the serial killer, rapist, kidnapper, and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer. The baby boomers and generation X are familiar with this story, but it was newer for most millennials and generation Z. It has become a phenomenon on social media because of the release of the new series. This story is so dark and twisted, it is truly unbelievable.

Over a span of thirteen years, Jeffrey Dahmer committed horrific acts on seventeen vulnerable victims. It was his attempted eighteenth victim who escaped and ultimately was the reason Dahmer was finally caught. These numbers could have been much lower, and several lives could have been saved if officials had paid more attention to minority groups. Dahmer’s targets were young, homosexual, black boys. The most important component to this story is the time period. His killings were from 1978-1991 when racism, homophobia, and discrimination were extremely prevalent all across the United States. When the victims went missing, police departments failed to do anything which allowed the killings to continue. Dahmer’s behaviors proved that if you stick to killing certain segments of our population, you can get away with it for a very long time.

Throughout history, our country has seen plenty of serial killers. From Ted Bundy to Charles Manson to John Wayne Gacy, there have been some notorious murders that shook the nation. But Jeffrey Dahmer was quite unique. He didn’t just kill his victims; he ate them. Dahmer admitted to all of his heinous acts when he was finally caught by the Milwaukee Police Department. He left nothing for detectives to have to search for. He was honest and specified to police exactly what he did to each victim. First he would usually beat then kill them with a weapon. Second he would dissect the body by removing organs and amputating the bones. Lastly, he would eat parts of the body, usually the heart.

The Netflix series stars actor Evan Peters, who portrays Dahmer’s life. The show attempts to depict events throughout his childhood that may have influenced him to commit the acts he did. This story is one that the public has been so infatuated with because of how disturbing and inconceivable it is. For younger viewers, it is difficult to understand how Dahmer got away with all of this for so long. It seems as if something similar happened today, the perpetrator would be instantly caught. An important detail is that Dahmer committed all of these murders in his apartment. His neighbors consistently reported strange noises and putrid smells to police. All of the reports were ignored.

Less than a week after being released, Netflix has the series ranked the #1 TV Show on the streaming service. Across all social media sites, this story is being talked about. Even Katy Perry has a song that references him. The lyrics say, “She eats your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer (whoa!)”. The series is very dismaying but it highlights a true tragedy as well as institutionalized discrimination that we can all learn from.

Why Queen Elizabeth did not want Camilla to become the new Queen

On September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away. Her legacy leaves behind a 70-year reign, the longest British monarch ever. The people of England, along with the rest of the world, has been mourning her death. She had 15 different Prime Ministers serve alongside her, the first being Winston Churchill. The Queen lived to be 96 years old and genuinely saw some of the most important historical events known to man. She lived through incredibly monumental moments from post-World War II to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Following her death, the Queen’s eldest son, Charles, took the throne as King. Although his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwell, will not be recognized as the new Queen, but instead, Queen Consort. This was a wish of Queen Elizabeth II, and Charles obeyed her demands. The history between this couple is extremely complex which is probably why Queen Elizabeth desired Camilla just to be a consort. When Charles was a young man, looking for a bride, he was infatuated with Camilla but knew he could not marry her because she was a commoner. It was expected of him to marry a princess or a member of the aristocracy. Charles went off to naval service in the early 70s and came home heart broken to discover that Camilla had married another man, Andrew Parker Bowles. As he went on to search for a bride, who would one day become Queen, Charles became obsessed with Diana Spencer, a member of one of the oldest aristocratic families in the country. She was 13 years younger than him and they did not spent much time together before getting married. They had two boys, William and Harry. Their marriage quickly spiraled down hill as Charles continuously had an affair with Camilla. It became extremely public as Diana expressed in an interview that there was a third member of their marriage. In 1992, the couple separated and ultimately divorced in 1996. Diana always blamed Camilla as the root cause of the tragic divorce. The British people were heartbroken and quickly villainized Camilla while supporting and empathizing with Diana. The Princess kept her title from the divorce settlement. Her journey became even more heart wrenching when she was tragically killed from a car accident in Paris in 1997. She was attempting to flee from paparazzi who would not leave her alone. Souls across the globe were shattered to lose their Princess Diana.

Camilla and Charles continued on with their relationship and ultimately married in 2005. The Queen so strongly disproved this that she did not attend her eldest son and the future King’s second wedding. It was her wish that Camilla was to never be Queen. Elizabeth believed that Camilla did not deserve the same title that she carried for seven decades. Camilla is not the mother of Charles’ children nor his first wife.

The Queen’s wishes were obeyed. Following her death, when Charles was crowned King, Camilla was titled “Queen Consort.” Which is defined as a spouse of a reigning monarch. The next real Queen we see will most likely be Princess Kate. Most of the public has been referring to Camilla as the new Queen, which infuriates loyal royal family followers and fans. So the next time you refer to her, make sure to call her Queen Consort.

Belize: Land of the Free by the Carib sea

Flag of Belize with latin phrase Sub Umbra Floreo “Under the shade I flourish”

On September 24,2022 marks the 41st independence day for the central American nation of Belize. After the efforts of George Candler Price, the first prime minster of Belize, and the People’s United Party (PUP) Belize achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1981. Belize became a colony to the United Kingdom since 1862, formerly known as British Honduras and changing its name to Belize on June 1973. Being the only country in Central America colonized by the British, the other states in Central America belonged to Spain, Belize is also the only country in Central America that uses English as its official language. Although Belize gained its independence from the United Kingdom there was a land dispute between both Spain and the United Kingdom, when the Spanish relinquished their colonies and gave independence to most countries in Central America Guatemala, being one of these countries claimed that it inherited Belize as well. This dispute was also one of the factors stopping Belize from initially gaining independence. There continues to be disputes with many people in Guatemala claiming that Belize belongs to them. Several Guatemalan presidents actually ran on the platform that they would acquire Belize even culminating in a referendum in Belize to take the case to the ICJ.

The Blue Hole

Belize is one of the most beautiful countries in the world with vast natural resources with the reason that the British wanted Belize was for the rare rare mahogany wood.Belize is endowed with a very high level of terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity and the largest unbroken barrier reef in the western hemisphere. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS), which is the second in length only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, stretches the full length of Belize’s coastline. Most of the country is covered in forest, about 61% of it and it is very well known for its several Cayes having several resorts on each island,Leonardo DiCaprio is planning on building an eco resort on one of the Keyes. Due to the high biodiversity of Belize there are also many animals all over Belize including Jaguars, the popular black howler monkey, whale sharks Tapirs(national animal of Belize , and even the Keel-Billed Toucan(national bird of Belize). One major natural tourist attraction to the country is the Great Blue Hole located near Amergris Caye. Which is a large underwater cavern/sinkhole creating the look of a large dark blue hole in the ocean. Then there is also the barrier reef being the largest in the northern hemisphere being an amazing place to dive, snorkel, sailing, and fishing.

The Keel Billed Toucan, the national bird of Belize

Belize is also home to a vast and diverse population of several different groups of people. Including the original Mayan population, Creole population(descended from the slaves brought to Belize for woodcutting),Mestizo population(latinos from the nearby Central American countries who moved to Belize), East Indians, Asian, white, and Garifuna (people descended from the indigenous and African population who originally lived on St.Vincent and the Grenadiers islands but then moved to Belize). Then there is also the unique location of Belize being in both Central America and along the Caribbean sea we see the influence of both Latin America and Caribbean culture on the nation. It is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and the Central American Integration System(SICA), the only country to be a part of all three. Due to this and a combination of the diverse people in Belize there are also several languages spoken all over the country, the vast majority of people in Belize speak standard English, but a variety of dialects and other languages are often spoken at home. Although English is the official language and most people understand it in Belize one of the most popular dialects spoken all over the country is that of creole/kriol , 1/3 of the population speak it as their main language, like most patois languages it has its roots during the time when slaves would combine English with their West African dialects, not following all the grammar rules, this created a new dialect that is still spoken in Belize. Spanish is also spoken by most of the population, with a majority of the population knowing the language and combining it at times with English as well. German is spoken by the prominent Mennonite population in the country, as well as Arabic and other Asians languages, Mayan by the Mayan population, and Garifuna by the Garifuna people.

Xunantunich Ruins located in the Cayo District

Belize is also known for its Mayan ruins. With one of its most famous being Xunantunich located in San Jose Succotz. The ancient Mayan city was a trading hub for most of the region with its strategic location allowed for the control of trade along this important river, and through the adjoining valley. It can now be visited in the center of a natural forest preserve.

The War To Save Our Children

With the constant reports on daily news channels and their websites, and parents on high alert, a silent war has begun. Rainbow-colored drugs have become a familiar image to those who are aware of the ongoing danger but, to many children, these colorful pills look like they’re candy! With the upcoming holiday rapidly approaching and death rates skyrocketing, according to Republican Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, “’every mom in the country’ is worried that their children will get ahold of rainbow-colored fentanyl.” In fact, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) released a statement on August 30th, “warning parents about an ‘alarming emerging trend’ of rainbow-colored fentanyl pills targeted toward children”. DEA Administrator Anne Milgram stated that these brightly colored pills and sometimes powder are a “deliberate effort by drug traffickers to drive addiction amongst kids and young adults.”

Because of the continuous rise of fentanyl overdoses in young people, schools are beginning to buy naloxone. Naloxone is a “medicine used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose”. The Los Angeles Unified School District was the first to announce, on September 22, that they would be carrying naloxone in the nurse’s office for all K-12 schools. The announcement came “after several suspected overdoses last month, with one juvenile dying at Bernstein High School in Hollywood”. The juvenile was Melanie Ramos, a fifteen-years-old, who, with a classmate, bought “a pill containing fentanyl from another youth, believing that it was the prescription painkiller Percocet”.

But that brings to question what fentanyl is.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid—which is a drug that was originally created to help treat pain. This drug is added to other drugs in order to give the users a better high. Fentanyl is often added to “heroin to increase its potency, or to be disguised as highly potent heroin.” Nowadays, fentanyl has been discovered in weed and other drugs, making the entire operation of buying drugs way more dangerous and deadly. The main issue with this additive is that many of the users don’t know that the drug they are buying has been laced with it—”which often results in overdose deaths”.

The White House has responded with the Biden-Harris Administration announcing New Actions and Funding to Address the Overdose Epidemic and Support Recovery. While this is good news, it also brings attention to the fact that people have been rallying for President Biden to bring action and attention to this for the past year. With most fentanyl coming from Mexico, “the mother’s group, Lost Voices of Fentanyl, which has more than 19,000 members on Facebook, argues that the Biden administration has not done enough to stop fentanyl from being brought across the border, or to raise awareness of its danger”. The mothers state that they would like President Biden to respond to the fentanyl crisis with the same severity he responded to COVID.

In 2021, the U.S. surpassed a record 100,000 overdose deaths—which was more than any previous year. For now, parents will have to watch their children closely.

De-Stressing in Stressful Times

With everything going on in the world today – wars, a possible recession, inflation, a global pandemic, and more – finding ways to de-stress can be difficult. Here are some ways to de-stress in these stressful times.

What are the essentials you need to take care of? Is there anything on your list you can take off or delegate to someone else? An article from Harvard reveals that this may be extremely beneficial to lowering stress. Try downsizing your to-do list if possible.

Photo from Harvard University

Make a playlist of relaxing music and do an activity that you enjoy. Ask yourself, when is the last time I relaxed? If it hasn’t been for a while, give yourself that break. Time away from stressful activities is essential, make sure you are getting that time to unwind or it could result in burnout. Some activities that could be enjoyable are crocheting, taking a bath, going on a walk, writing, and more.

Avoid things that will result in further stress or feelings of unease. Such as alcohol, substance use, avoiding sleep, and more. Make sure when you are taking time for yourself you are doing so in a healthy manner. Avoiding harmful activities is an important step in de-stressing your life.

US Involvement in China vs Taiwan Unrest.

The Chinese foreign ministry said on Monday that China has lodged “stern representations” with the United States after U.S. President Joe Biden said U.S. forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. China reserves the right to take all necessary measures in response to activities that split the nation apart, said Mao Ning, spokesperson at the foreign ministry, at a regular media briefing.

She also urged the U.S. to handle Taiwan-related issues “carefully and properly”, and not send “wrong signals” to Taiwan independence separatist forces, warning the United States not to seriously damage Sino-U.S. relations and the peace in the Taiwan Strait.

An interesting parallel that is often drawn in this situation is that if the Russia/ Ukraine conflict is on the surface level they appear to be conflicts caused by disagreements over sovereignty. In both cases, the aggressor is the country that believes that the other should still be under its rule.

As for the US involvement, tensions appear to be rising. Due to the lack of action on the US’s part in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the opinion is that a ‘green light’ was shown to the Chinese government to undertake similar action against Taiwan. The worry has been that any intervention in Ukraine would likely cause WWIII due to the tumultuous relationship between Russia and NATO but I fail to see how the situation differs in the case of Taiwan, surely the effects of such an intervention would be similar.

The Sinking of the Andrea Doria: Who’s to Blame

Through the thick curtain of night and fog, the lights of the Swedish passenger liner, the Stockholm, began to grow visible. It was minutes before 11:10 p.m. on July 25, 1956, that an officer of the Italian ocean liner, Andrea Doria, cried out in horror, “she’s coming right at us!” . Though attempts were made on both ships to stop the collision, it was to no avail. Forty-six passengers from the Andrea Doria lost their lives, as did five from the Stockholm. The aftershock of the incident caused fear and hesitation. No one knew what caused the two ships to collide—nor did anyone know if it was a fatal accident that could easily happen again. Questions began to arise and fingers were pointed, but no one could confirm whose fault it was.

The Andrea Doria was considered to be one of the most luxurious and safest vessels of its time. With the latest radarscopes and watertight compartments, she was thought to be the new ‘unsinkable’ ship. Often referred to as the “Grand Dame of the Sea”, the Andrea Doria left Genoa, Italy on July 17, 1956 with 1,706 people aboard—1,134 passengers and 572 crewmen. As the Andrea Doria had taken 100 transatlantic trips since 1953, this journey was set to be her 101st and was expected to go as normal. At the helm was Captain Piero Calamai, a “venerable Italian mariner and veteran of both World War I and World War II”. The 524-foot Stockholm, on the other hand, was equipped with an icebreaker bow to cut through the current and create a smooth ride for its passengers. Having left New York earlier that day, under the watch of Third Officer Johan-Ernst Carstens-Johannsen, the Stockholm traveled at full speed.

The events that followed are unsure and even to this day no one really knows what happened—“the official inquiry into the accident was inconclusive”. It is unknown if Third Officer Carstens-Johannsen and Captain Calamai had misinterpreted the radar, but what is known is that the Stockhom was traveling outside the lane normally used by northbound vessels”, while the Andrea Doria chose to pass on her starboard (right) side rather than the customary port (left) side”.  In other words, the Stockholm decided to travel “on the standard port-to-port pass (on the left), Doria’s Captain, Piero Calamai, elected to pass on the starboard (right) side”.  Both ships were going the wrong direction and it wasn’t until the ships were a mile apart that they saw the other.

Calamai ordered for the Andrea Doria to take a sharp left while Carstens-Johannsen desperately tried to slow the Stockholm by reversing the propellers. Unfortunately, both were too late. At 11:10 p.m., the Stockholm’s icebreaker bow “struck the Italian liner at her most vulnerable place, ripping open seven of the Andrea Doria’s eleven decks and rupturing her fuel tanks”, “penetrating some 30 feet into its hull”. Almost instantly the Andrea Doria began to list, passing the 15 degrees she was designed to withstand and forcing engineers to realize that the ship could not be righted. The Captain order the passages and crew to abandon ship.

With the port side at such a dangerous angle, the lifeboats stationed there could not be deployed. Out of the 1,706 people on board, only 1,004 could safely evacuate on the remaining lifeboats. Captain Calamari instantly sent out an S.O.S, catching the attention of ships nearby. The Cape Ann, a cargo ship with two lifeboats, was closest. Covering the 15 ½ miles in only 30 minutes, the messages from the Andrea Doria were incessant: “Impossible to Put Lifeboats at Sea”, “We Need Boats”, “Need Immediate Assistance”. The Ile de France, a French ocean liner, made her way to the wreckage. It was at 12:15 that Captain Calamai sent a message to the Stockholm: “You Are One Mile From Us. Please, if Possible, Come Immediately to Pick Up Our Passengers”. After ensuring that the Stockholm was not in any danger or had any critical damage, the captain ordered many of her lifeboats into the water and to the Andrea Doria

The rescue of the Andrea Doria was marked to be one of the largest maritime rescue in history. Lasting several hours, nearly all the survivor’s had been evacuated by 5:30 a.m. and by 10:09 a.m., the Andrea Doria disappeared under the ocean waves.

In the end, the Andrea Doria’s captain, crew, and shipbuilders were blamed for the tragedy. It is only recently that researchers believe “that Carstens made the crucial error by misreading his radar and concluding that the Doria was several miles farther away than it actually was”. Even today, the blame for this tragedy is still an ongoing a topic of debate.

Still, this does not change the fact that the Andrea Doria rests 240 feet beneath the surface of the North Atlantic, slowly disintegrating.
