San Jose, CA Becomes the First to Pass Gun Ownership Requirements

On January 25, 2022, there was a city council meeting held in regards to whether or not to pass a gun law requiring gun owners to have liability insurance and to pay a fee of $25. The mayor of San Jose, Sam Liccardo, released a statement after the meeting was held saying that both the bills were passed with an overwhelming majority. He released a statement saying, “Thank you to my council colleagues who continue to show their commitment to reducing gun violence and its devastation in our community.” The bills themselves are meant to hopefully reduce the amount of gun violence happening and to help taxpayers by lightening the financial burden of gun violence. The bills still need to get final approval but if everything stays on track the bills are meant to take effect in August.

The money that gets collected from the gun owners will be put towards initiatives to alleviate gun violence and harm. A rough estimate of how much money will be collected because of these bills is $25 million. The mayor of San Jose initiated both of these bills back in June of last year, almost two weeks after, one gunman shot 9 people working a light rail yard.

These bills are significant because many bills similar to these have been proposed but never have been put into action. The liability insurance, according to Mayor Liccardo, is meant to, “have gun safes, install trigger locks and take gun safety classes.” It would also cover losses and damages from any accidental use of the firearm. So with these being the incentives to get the insurance, it’s important to note that people won’t face any criminal repercussions if they don’t have insurance.

With these bills being passed over such a controversial topic, of course, the public has very split thoughts on the new laws. Some people claim that this is going against the constitution and people’s “rights.” Others argue that it’s an amazing thing to take steps forward in preventing gun violence.

Biden Sends out 500 Million Free Covid Tests this Week

President Biden teamed up with USPS to send 500 million free covid tests to Americans Nationwide. Each household that orders from the site, will receive four free rapid tests.

The United States Postal Service’s duty to deliver 500 million coronavirus test kits has placed it in an unprecedented position in the country’s pandemic response, just as covid-19 infections have reached a peak within its ranks and its network is under extreme strain. The free quick tests are expected to ship by the end of the month, according to online orders received this week. In what analysts describe as the largest disaster-relief mobilization in the agency’s 247-year history, the agency has employed thousands of seasonal workers and converted more than 40 sites into ad hoc fulfillment centers.

To obtain a test, families can go to COVIDtests.gov and request up to four free tests to be delivered to their homes with just their names and addresses. The website goes up at a time when the Biden administration is under increasing pressure to address the coronavirus testing shortage caused by the Omicron outbreak. The White House claims that tens of millions of tests are already ready to go. It will invest $4 billion to get the first 500 million tests into people’s hands across the United States.

Although measures to ensure each household receives four free Covid tests, there has been an increase in persons attempting to defraud or steal people’s information by mimicking the legitimate website. People attempting to con you can be highly clever in their attempts to convince you to send them money or personal information, according to the BBB. One method is to use a domain name that is quite similar to the original one. The real domain is COVIDtests.gov and the program is also absolutely free. So if a website requests credit card information or other forms of payment, you should immediately exit.

Peleton’s Stock Drops After Multiple Fictional Characters Die

Peloton was founded in 2012 and experienced a surge in popularity throughout the years. A standard bike costs $2,100 initially and $500 every year after. They are well known for their fitness products, being sleek, and technologically advanced. The brand started out with a fitness bike and moved onto treadmills, etc. People love the brand because it’s based on complete convenience. Peloton users, pay for a membership for their bike and that membership includes qualified trainers that will work members through a “high-intensity” spin class. It essentially provides spin classes that people have to go to a studio to take and offers it in the convenience of people’s homes. It became immensely popular throughout the years because a lot of celebrities would use their products and would promote them on their social media, making them trendy.

Peloton’s stock was steady throughout the years but this year it’s taken quite a hit for an unexpected reason. One of the Peloton bikes was featured on the “Sex and the City” reboot where one of the characters Mr. Big had a heart attack while riding one of the Peloton bikes. The stock dropped almost immediately when it was released by 11%. Then another show, “Billions,” recently released an episode where Mike Wagner experienced a heart attack while riding one of the bikes as well. This caused the company to lose stock even more. The stock hasn’t been doing too well in the past two years and with these fictitious characters almost dying because of the bikes, the stocks had plummeted 24% within the last week. There were rumors that the CEO had ultimately made the decision to halt production, but he recently came out with a statement stating that they have no plans on stopping production any time soon. They also released another statement saying that they never gave “Billions” production company permission to use their bikes.

Rollo May’s Influence on the Modern World

Rollo May was a phenomenal humanistic psychologist who made most of his influence during the 1950s – 1970s. Since May was a humanistic psychologist, most of his works focused mainly on the potential for growth and achievement in all human beings. He believed that human beings fear death so much because we are not able to comprehend our own existence. Rollo May’s leading intention was to understand the underlying methods and reality behind human suffering and crises. He ultimately achieved this by putting together parts of the humanistic theory along with existentialism in his approach. Existentialism focuses on a person’s search for meaning and purpose in life. He was brought to the peak of his success as he started writing books in 1939. His most well-received and influential book, Man’s Search for Himself, was what got his opinions, theories, and beliefs into the world. May also discussed his unique views on anxiety and the best ways to treat it in his writings. May argued that anxiety and stress act as a significant catalyst in a human’s life that enables a person to make courageous and essential decisions. He had a long-lasting influence on the world because of his fascinating new ideas and theories.

Rollo May was born in Ada, Ohio, and he grew up with a humble upbringing. Rollo May was born on April 21st, 1909. Unfortunately, May’s childhood was not easy, to say the least. His parents didn’t get along and eventually divorced, and his sister had suffered a psychotic breakdown. May was the second of six children in his family. His parents, Earl May and Matie Boughton raised him. His family moved to Michigan when May was still a child. Rollo May attended Michigan State University until he got expelled for his involvement with a radical school magazine. He then attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where he received his bachelor’s degree, majored in English, and minored in Greek literature and History. After his graduation, he went to Greece to teach English at Anatolia College for three years. After returning to the U.S in 1942, May was stricken with tuberculosis. He had to spend three years in a sanatorium in New York to get cured. This was the major turning point of his life. While he faced the high possibility of death, he also kept himself occupied during the long, empty days by reading. Finally, after getting cured, May entered the graduate psychology program at Columbia University in New York City. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1949 with the highest honors. He endured a lot of trauma, but he has succeeded because of his dedication and hard work.

Rollo May was a very hardworking and determined man who endured a difficult upbringing and a disease that almost brought death upon him. Despite his troublesome upbringing and sickness, he managed to write 23 successful books about his theories and views. May wrote his first book in 1939 called The Art of Counseling. The Art of Counseling was about his experience with counseling and how he thought it was the solution to various problems. Some of the topics he discusses in this informational book are empathy, religion, personality problems, and mental health. His third book, The Meaning of Anxiety, explored anxiety and how it can eventually affect your psychological health. May also mentions how he believes that experiencing anxiety eventually can help aid development and how managing anxiety appropriately can help lead to having a healthy personality. May’s most famous and significant book, Man’s Search for Himself, earned the attention of many psychologists. Man’s Search for Himself is about the problems he encountered with his patients, such as loneliness, boredom, and emptiness. The book is essentially his take on the solutions to each of these problems.

Rollo May had many new theories, beliefs, and perspectives that have had an everlasting influence on the world of psychology and the world as a whole. He was a very firm believer in living in the moment. His time in the hospital with tuberculosis contributed to this because he would go insane if he were attempting to count down every day for 18 months. Tuberculosis is a deadly bacterial lung infection. He had to learn to look at the positives in where he was currently in his life and to accept what he was going through. May also believed that drugs, alcohol, and meditation don’t lead to a creative activity that soothes anxiety. Although meditation is a good practice, it doesn’t lead to creativity and new ideas. Another fundamental concept for May is will. May defined will, as the ability to train yourself to achieve all of your goals. Rollo May also had numerous ideas regarding anxiety. May’s growing interest in anxiety developed actively after his time spent in the sanatorium when he was sick with tuberculosis. For example, he thought of anxiety as a new world knocking at your door that acts as a stimulus to start doing things. He said that anxiety forces and pressures us to make the most of our experiences and surroundings. May’s definition of anxiety is “the apprehension cued off by a threat to some value which the individual holds essential to his existence as a self.” May distinguished the difference between anxiety and fear. He also defined the difference between normal anxiety and neurotic anxiety. Also, May believed that a man’s biggest fear is having to come to terms with his own demise. This struggle allows humans the opportunity to live life to the fullest. He believed that knowledge of our death gives us normal and healthy anxiety that continuously hounds us to make the most out of the life we have left. His own feelings of isolation, as well as watching others deal with fear and anxiety, gave him a useful insight into the subject. May later concluded that anxiety and tension are essential to an individual’s growth. May also found that anxiety and stress contribute to what it means to be a human. According to May, guilt occurs when people deny their potential and fail to perceive the needs of others or aren’t aware of their dependency on the world. Anxiety and guilt root from issues dealing with someone’s existence in the world. May also believed that psychotherapists, towards the end of the 20th century, had broken away from the overused psychoanalytic theories and started creating their own. This resulted in a crisis within the world of psychotherapy.  May proved that not sticking to the outdated methods eventually resulted in improved therapeutic techniques.

Rollo May’s theories, perspectives, views, and ideas have resulted in momentous changes in therapy and have changed millions of lives for the better. Currently, people are utilizing his books for further research on topics such as anxiety, counseling, and guilt. May’s book, The Art of Counseling,  has influenced skeptical individuals who didn’t believe in counseling to try it. Because of this, many people were cured of depression and anxiety through therapy and counseling sessions. May also managed to change the direction of therapy by introducing the existential approach to treatment. He gave therapists a five-step method to help patients get through crises and challenges and eventually help them grow. He was also a very inspiring individual who proved that anybody can accomplish anything by working hard and overcoming obstacles.  May stated, “Courage is not the absence of despair; it is, rather, the capacity to move ahead in spite of despair.”  This quote defines a life well lived and shows his personal growth. By changing the direction of psychotherapy over the past fifty-plus years, Rollo May has also changed the lives of countless individuals whose therapists integrated his theories.

Dozens of Starbucks Locations Attempting Unionization, Following Success in Buffalo, N.Y.

The “Siren” logo hangs outside a Starbucks Coffee shop, Wednesday, July 14, 2021, in Boston. (npr.org)

The Elmwood Avenue Starbucks in Buffalo, N.Y. is now the home of the first ever union within the company. The attempt, petitioned in the mid-summer of 2021, saw success after its lengthy election process, and became a source of inspiration for what is now two dozen other Starbucks locations across the U.S. Although Starbucks ultimately agreed to respect and acknowledge any unions formed or attempted to form, they warn that unionizing could have many adverse effects and even lead to a division between the workforce that often travels between chain stores depending on labor needs.

Elections were announced after worsened working conditions caused by COVID-19, according to the Buffalo Starbucks, with severe understaffing and pay issues. With only 1.2% of the country’s food service employees unionized, the results of Buffalo’s successful unionization attempt seemed to naturally cause locations facing similar problems to work out election dates and bargain with Starbucks Workers United for guidance.

Among the stores working towards unionizing is Power and Baseline, which, if approved, would be the the first unionized Starbucks in Arizona. Suffering similar issues as the other stores, the store was inclined to begin the process in sympathy of their manager who was forced to take unpaid medical time off, quoting, “They said fine, schedule more days with shorter shifts. The expectation was still for me to work 40 hours … At this point, I thought, this job is going to kill me. I physically cannot do this job.” Election ballots for this case are due on February 2nd.

The impact Buffalo’s Starbucks had on its peers, and even on similar coffee chains, is undeniable, and many food service workers are now looking forward to a more liberated era among employees empowered by the unionization process.

How to Become a Journalist

A career in journalism is fast-paced and requires heavy academic preparation. Before deciding to pursue a career as a journalist, it is important to complete adequate research about what journalism is and what a job as a journalist is like. Journalists typically practice many different kinds of communication but choose one specialty. A great journalist has impressive skills in researching, interviewing, reporting, and writing. These capabilities are possible to achieve if the student is committed to their craft and willing to go build the adequate groundwork for their desired career in journalism.

For most careers, education directed to that job begins in college, but for journalism, the student must begin preparation in high school. The New York Film Academy suggests to “write for your school’s newspaper or literary journal. If your school has its own student-run publication, volunteer as a writer or editor. Just like writing blog posts, having a portfolio consisting of a variety of writing or editing examples heightens your chance of finding a job in journalism.” When a student has previous experience with writing for an established institution, it shows colleges and employers that they are committed and trained. In addition, it is vital for students to show colleges and potential employers that they are experienced and competent with technology. Technology is not only essential for writing articles, but also for finding and recording data/statistics, conducting research, and networking. For students planning to pursue journalism, high school is extremely important in the trajectory of their career.

To get a good job in the journalism field, applying to the right colleges is essential for success. To apply to the right schools, in-depth research must be done. Finding colleges with good journalism or communications programs has proven difficult. It is very important to check graduation rates and employment rates for students after their degree is completed.  Students will want to know they won’t have too much trouble finding a job out of college, especially if they have loans to pay off. Once the student has applied and been accepted to the school of their choice, it is critical they enroll in courses that will prepare them for future opportunities. Courses to take include, broadcast news writing, copyediting and design, history of American media, magazine writing, mass communication, media law, ethics, and reporting. These classes will give students the tools they need to be successful in their individual careers.

While in college, taking a variety of communication courses will help students decide what type of journalism they want to pursue.  Categories of journalism include investigative journalism, sports journalism, broadcast journalism, travel journalism, music journalism, and political journalism, to name a few. Investigative journalism is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate one topic of choice, such as serious crimes, political corruption, or corporate criminality. Broadcast journalism is the field journalism that is broadcast on radio, television, and or the internet. Travel journalism is the field in which the practitioner travels to numerous locations, explores them, researches and writes about their cultural heritage, food, and people. Music journalism is a form of media criticism in which specialists review songs, albums and live concerts, profiles of recording artists, and reporting of artist news and music events. Political journalism is a general branch of journalism in which journalists cover all aspects of political events, elections, and controversies. The best way for a student to select a specialty is by choosing a niche that they are passionate about.

Adequate work experience is one of the most important things a student can achieve in college. Internships are the best way to get work experience while also having time for college courses. To get hired as an intern, students must reach out to various establishments and have a finished resume. Also, if a student has a portfolio with writing samples, it can help show employers the quality and style of their work. Internships also allow students to get a taste of that specific industry and see if they really want a job in that field. Students can also develop relationships and connections with people in the field of their choice which can help them get jobs later. While the practical impacts of internships are advantageous, students have the potential to gain confidence and independence throughout an internship experience as well.

After students have earned their degree, the last step to becoming a journalist is applying for jobs and working. The main aspects of selecting a job are salary, location, the opportunity for advancement, and the work environment. Making sure your job can support your lifestyle is very important, especially out of college where student loans may need to be paid off. Also, because most journalism job opportunities are typically in big cities, where rent is higher, it is crucial to make sure the salary earned is supportive and secure. If done right, a journalism career can be both emotionally and financially fulfilling.

Big Tech Braces For Increased Global Regulation

After the worldwide outbreak of the novel coronavirus in 2020, companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta have become staples of modern society, easing the transition to daily digital functioning. However, for years, Big Tech has faced backlash from global legislatures regarding copyright, data collection, and human rights.

Now, after the revelations of Frances Haugen, Facebook whistleblower, regarding Meta platform’s algorithms targeted at advertising at vulnerable children and profiting from disinformation and hateful content, a turning point has been reached in taking legislative action through regulation.

As a result, the Federal Trade Commission is pushing forward antitrust lawsuits against Facebook, and specifically in the U.S., a package of antitrust bills emphasized on technology companies are underway. Proposals to update competition law, establish online privacy rights, and protect kids from harm on the internet have broad bipartisan support. Although, lawmakers have expressed some concerns regarding the bills, the bills themselves were created based on a 16-month investigation into competitive practices used by Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. The investigation found that each company has monopoly power, and recommended legislative changes to promote more competition in the digital market.

Globally, new laws under consideration in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. could place restrictions on how technology companies can treat their competitors, restrict AI usage, and decrease data flow. As a result, these limits could operationally impact big tech, prevent digital advertising, delay major product changes, or force ongoing oversight of activities.

In the past, regulation has had minor impacts on Silicon Valley’s valuations. In 2022, this could change. The wave of scrutiny led by media exposure on Facebook’s whistleblower have made it more difficult for companies to fight back. Facebook announced that it would shut down its facial recognition system in November 2021, and has agreed to sell its animated-images acquisition, Giphy. Alphabet’s Google has agreed to work closely with the Competition and Markets Authority to remove cookies from the Chrome browser, and executives are looking to build new appeals processes for content removals on Youtube.

Young protestors in Berlin holding placards, including one reading “Thanks, Rezo, perhaps it helps,” a reference to the German YouTuber 2019.

While Big Tech companies say that they need new regulations, there is still some pushback against proposals around specific areas of interest. For example, requirements in proposed online-content rules could encourage companies to remove content they merely disagree with, threatening the core values behind free speech.

It is thanks to the infamous 1996 Communications Decency Act Section 230 that platforms have, as of yet, been able to self-police and allow users to freely speak online without repercussions. And while social media giants have been exercising their right to regulate more frequently during events following the COVID-19 outbreak, changes in CDA 230 are anticipated in the coming years, leading to more tension between governments and Big Tech.

Is the US Democracy in Danger?

Biden tries to salvage our Democracy by pushing to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

The Democratic Party is facing a moment of strong symbolism only a day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which Democrats had set as a deadline to approve new laws to counter Republican voting restrictions in many states. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to call votes that will uphold ideological divides within the party and call into question the credibility of an under-fire President who has led a fair campaign for legislation demanded by modern civil rights leaders in the week that he celebrates his first anniversary in office.

Public pressure intensifies as citizens express their position unapologetically

A year after President Joe Biden’s inauguration — and one year after an insurgency that attempted to prevent the 2020 presidential election from being certified — a majority of Republican voters continue to believe that Biden was illegitimately elected to the White House. Many Republicans’ denial of the 2020 election’s legitimacy has driven widespread voter suppression initiatives at the state level, as well as a growing push to disrupt America’s electoral system. In a last-ditch effort, Biden is pressing for filibuster reform to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which are both voting rights initiatives. Without modifying the filibuster rules, both legislation will encounter stiff opposition in the Senate.

While efforts to preserve our Democracy are in action, a new poll was released just days after the anniversary of President Joe Biden’s first year in office and just days after the Capitol incident. It appears that a majority of Americans believe that the United States’ democracy is on the verge of extinction. The evaluation is based on a new poll According to Schoen Cooperman Research’s research: About 26% of Americans, believe that democracy in the United States is secured for future generations, only 23% of those polled indicated they weren’t sure, while 51% felt democracy was on the verge of extinction. While initiatives are being taken, this poll revealed Americans’ loss of faith in the US Democracy and their hope is tragically hanging by a thread.

Chicago Teachers Union’s “Illegal Strike” Comes to an Uncertain End

The Chicago school system is the third-largest in the United States, with 653 schools. All were shut down.

On January 4th, after non-stop severe spikes in COVID cases in Chicago schools, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), representing 25,000 teachers and school personnel, refused to show up to their in-person classes until changes were made to the city’s health precautions.

Although 91% of Chicago school teachers and staff are vaccinated, along with around half of children aged 12 and older, members of the CTU have been growing increasingly concerned with the rapid growth in cases. Chicago hospitals have been seeing 4,600 daily cases, rising steadily each week, with seven a day being children.

The main demand proposed by the CTU was for the schools to reinstate virtual learning, as they did at the start of the pandemic. The Union also called for students to provide negative tests when they return in-person for further safety. The motion, supported by 73% of union members, lasted for five days, keeping 340,000 students from attending school. In quick response, a group of parents alleged this was an illegal strike, although the union attested otherwise, and intended to harm the school system by violating the terms of the CTU’s collective bargaining agreement. A lawsuit was quickly brought forth to Cook County Circuit Court on January 7th, with parents claiming, “CTU members voted to refuse to teach under the conditions set forth by CPS. That is a strike by definition.”

The CTU agreed to return to their classes on January 12th, under the agreement that Chicago Public schools would allow for stricter COVID testing, along with the option to teach remotely until January 18th, and possibly beyond with the approval of the Chicago school system. In addition, the Liberty Justice Center continues with the lawsuit brought by the parents, hoping to restrict any further actions by the CTU that might be harmful to Chicago schools and their system.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly Proposes To Set Aside $600M, Spend $1.8 Billion

Democratic Governor of Kansas, Laura Kelly, proposed on Wednesday to set aside $600 million of its surplus revenue into a rainy day fund, while spending $1.8 billion on various projects.

Governor Laura Kelly, State of the State address

Included in Gov. Kelly’s blueprint for state spending through June 2023 are renovations to state office buildings, new health department laboratories, and undoing the financial maneuvers that lawmakers used to deal with previous budget shortfalls, such as the timing of state aid payments to public schools.

Kelly’s spending proposal will likely be met with backlash from the Republican-controlled Legislature, particularly regarding the expansion of Medicaid for the needy, elderly, and disabled, which GOP lawmakers have continuously blocked. Her proposal will also provide a one-time $250 income tax rebate for Kansas residents who filed state income tax returns last year. Although, the $600 million would provide an extra cushion in future years for the state, something top Republicans have recently pushed for.

Kansas State University

As Gov. Kelly spoke in her annual State of the State address on Tuesday evening, she emphasized the state’s growth in business and low rates of unemployment, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Her opponents argue that this boom in state economy is due to the billions of dollars in federal COVID-19 relief funds, as well as high rates of inflation. Senate budget committee Chair Rick Billinger states, “These dollars can disappear really, really quickly. We cannot afford reckless spending.”

Alongside new government facilities and tax rebates, Gov. Kelly announced a freeze in tuition for Kansas college students. The budget blueprint would have the effect of restoring the state’s spending on higher education to “pre-pandemic levels” with an additional $46 million to account for increases in tuition. This announcement addresses years of concern regarding the increasing costs of college. The state’s Board of Regents attempts to control rising costs of tuition included freezing tuition last fall at five of the six universities in Kansas.
