The First President to Face Criminal Charges

Manhattan prosecutors have accused Donald J. Trump, who has endured two impeachment trials, a special counsel inquiry, and decades of investigations, of planning a secretive payment scheme to secure his path to the presidency and concealing it from the White House. Mr. Trump has denied the charges against him, but this case carries significant political ramifications and marks a risky new phase in the high-profile life of the real estate tycoon and former president. It also raises the possibility of a humiliating criminal trial for him.

Mr. Trump, who is facing 34 felony charges, appeared at the Criminal Courts Building in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday. Despite his supporters rallying outside, the former president remained quiet and passive at the defense table, attentively listening to the prosecutors as they presented their case against him. During the hearing, Mr. Trump only spoke a few words and pleaded ‘not guilty’. This surprised people as he recently attempted a third run for the White House.

New information regarding Mr. Trump’s is being released by the minute.

Overview of the Fight to Legalize Basement Apartments in New York.

Currently, activists and residents in New York are fighting to legalize illegal basement apartments in New York. A current bill in the state senate, S2276A, sponsored by Senator Brian Kavanagh and endorsed by Gov. Kathy Hochul would create initiatives to legalize dwelling in specific basements and cellars. This bill would amend the Multiple Dwelling Law and the Private Housing Finance Law and reduce the requirements for legal housing in NY.

The argument that groups like Basement Apartments Safe for Everyone (BASE) are campaigning on is that basements and cellars would solve the housing crisis in the city. BASE has also advocated that legalizing basements would make it easier to track them, and therefore make them safer. Activists are calling for safety measures like mandatory smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, backwater protection valves, and building standards like minimum celling heights. These provisions were supposed to be included in the state’s spending plan which was due on April 1st, 2023. However, last minute revisions proposed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and the state legislature means that the future of basement dwelling in NY is unclear.

The biggest takeaway from this situation is that there is a major housing shortage and income crisis in NY. One activist said “basements are not the best places to live, but some families don’t have a choice. The rent in a basement is usually lower and that’s why some of us risk ourselves living in a basement.” Rent keeps rising and houses are getting smaller. The average 1 bedroom in NY is 4,000$, which is a 4% increase from 2022. Rising rent has forced low-income families to either move into illegal basements or find public housing. Moreover, the value of NY apartments is declining, while costing more than ever, as the city can’t keep up with much needed building repairs and improvements.

Easy recipes for college students

As a college student, I learned that it is not easy to cook for yourself every day and find healthy recipes to get your nutrients in. I was always very used to having home-cooked meals and eating very healthily. Another issue many college students run into is that trying to be healthy can get expensive and not fall into the college student budget.

3 Easy Healthy Recipes for College Students:

  1. For breakfast, Overnight Oats are a very nutritious breakfast. It is easy and quick to make the night before and can save you a lot of time in the oatmeal. This recipe consists of oatmeal, water, and any toppings one might like to add. A few are fruits, peanut butter, and cinnamon.
  2. For lunch, as someone who likes to eat something light, a Salad can be a very healthy option and you can just add many different things for protein. An example is a hard-boiled egg because it is something that can fill you up with your salad.
  3. For dinner, Grilled Chicken with vegetables. This recipe is very easy because all you need is chicken and you can even buy microwavable vegetables that are still very healthy. For the chicken, to make it healthy, all you need to add is very little seasoning because the vegetables will also help give the chicken taste.

What is BRICS?

The abbreviation BRICS refers to the world’s major emerging market economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It has had a good impact on the world system, with China being the second-largest economy in 2010, India the tenth-largest, Brazil the sixth-largest, Russia the ninth-largest, and South Africa the 26th-largest. Furthermore, BRICS trade and investment with low-income nations provided a vital support system after the global financial crisis.Fifth BRICS Summit – general background

What is BRICS purpose?

BRIC countries contribute 11% of global GDP and have since increased to 30%. According to Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill, these will be the fastest expanding market economies in 2001. BRICS leaders regularly attend summits together and frequently cooperate with one another’s interests. Because of cheaper labor and production costs, these economies may be wealthier than most major economic powers by 2050. Furthermore, the BRICS countries are viewed as having potential for overseas expansion or foreign direct investment (FDI) by other countries. Goldman Sachs established a BRIC-focused investment fund. However, it was merged with a broader emerging markets fund in 2015 due to a decline in the BRIC economy growth prospects for the economies.Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) Definition in Investing

The effects of Mexico’s interest in BRICS

Mexico has indicated an interest in joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) group of emerging countries. The action comes as tensions between the government and its northern neighbor, the United States, rise over immigration, border security, commerce, and human rights. Mexico sees the BRICS as a new platform for diversifying its foreign contacts and expanding its global influence. However, Mexico’s ambition to join the BRICS confronts hurdles and uncertainties, such as the fact that no criteria or mechanism for admitting new members has been explicitly stated.Mexico Plans to Join BRICS Amid Growing Tensions with US

Why is being band TickTok

TikTok is a popular social media software that allows users to produce and watch short-form videos. It is well-known for its addictive nature and high levels of engagement, and it is used to market and sell items. It has over one billion monthly active users worldwide and is predicted to surpass three billion downloads and spend $3 billion across iOS and Google Play by September 2021. Yet, because Chinese people mostly own TikTok, there have been recurring concerns about the possible use or exploitation of the sensitive information it collects about its users. TickTok: What It Is, How It Works, and Why It’s Popular

Why the U.S. want to band TickTok

TikTok’s popularity has risen to over 1 billion active users. Yet, its expansion has raised concerns among federal authorities and security experts that China’s Communist Party (CCP) could get unrestricted access to sensitive data collected on Americans. Republican lawmakers are leading the charge to ban TikTok in the United States, citing concerns that ByteDance may be tracking user data to track surfing history and location, thus fueling misinformation attempts. TikTok insists that the CFIUS’s demand for divestiture will not address security concerns. CEO Shou Zi Chew is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill next week, where lawmakers from both parties are likely to interrogate him about the app’s potential security threats. Why the U.S. and Other Countries Want to Ban or Restrict TikTok

How is the public reacting towards congress agenda

On Thursday, a flood of TikTokers mocked a US House session highlighting security concerns about the app. Creators and commentators shared their criticisms live as the session aired, alleging lawmakers didn’t appear to understand the platform they’re suing and didn’t give TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew a fair chance to speak. TikTok lives streams of the event was drowning in criticism, with viewers decrying how Congress handled legitimate worries about the app’s security issues.TikTokers mocked the US congressional hearing against the app, derogatorily calling lawmakers ‘boomers’ who are ’embarrassing’ them in front of the world.

What are walkable cities?

A walkable city is simply a city that prioritizes green transportation like walking or biking. Walkable cities have become popularized by environmentalists who believe that walkable cities are more sustainable and economically beneficial. Walkable cities are also called 15-minute cities because they are, in theory, supposed to be built in a way that pedestrians can reasonably get anywhere in 15 minutes. The ideal walkable city would be set up in 3 zones. The 5-minute zone would include a town center, multiple housing types, and small businesses. The 15-minute zone would include schools, grocery stores, public parks, and so on. The 15-minute biking zone would include medical facilities and other higher education centers.

Cities that have trouble becoming walkable are made of single-use zoning instead of multi-use land. This means that areas in cities are separated for different functions. For example, if you need to go to the doctor’s office then to the movie theater, you have to travel in different zones. Cities like Plano, Texas and Tampa, Florida have already taken initiatives to create multi-use zones.

However, one problem with walkable cities is not necessarily building them but keeping them. 15-minute cities are more expensive to live in because of the cost of sustainable projects. This means that those who would benefit from walkable cities the most, like those without a car or low-income residents, cannot afford the initial cost of living in a walkable city.

The first step to creating walkable cities is rethinking old ideas about city planning. Thinking about what is truly needed in a city. Think about how necessary it is to have to drive 20 minutes to get from the doctor’s office to the grocery store. Imagining how a city could be built around pedestrian transportation instead of automotive transportation is a good first step.

6 Studies Everyone Should Know About

Spontaneous Knotting of an Agitated String

In 2007, Dorian M Raymer and Douglas E Smith published a paper titled Spontaneous Knotting of an Agitated String. They used mathematical knot theory to analyze the complex knots formed in strings when the string was tumbled in a box. While their main focus was to classify the knots through the use of knot theory, which provides an interesting look into a problem any of us have faced if we have a box of tangled shoelaces or a jewelry box with an especially-overwhelming mess of intertwined old necklace chains.

Water-Induced Finger Wrinkles Improve Handling of Wet Objects

Ever wonder why your fingers get pruney when you do the dishes or sit in a bathtub for a while? Well, Kyriacos Kareklas, Daniel Nettle, and Tom V. Smulders from the Centre for Behaviour and Evolution, Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University, published a paper explaining this phenomenon and directly addresses some common flimflam.

Failure is Also an Option

This paper, written by Antoine Amarilli, Marc Beunardeau, Rémi Géraud, and David Naccache, was written in defense of failure. This study follows the world’s most famous walking event, The Nijmeegse Vierdaagse, and how this event proves how strategic failure is key to achieving the optimal strategy.

The Dead Salmon Study

The paper Neural Correlates of Interspecies Perspective Taking in the Post-Mortem Atlantic Salmon: An Argument For Proper Multiple Comparisons Correction, also known as ‘The Dead Salmon Study,’ is a study performed by Craig M. Bennett, Abigail A. Baird, Michael B. Miller, and George L. Wolford. This study focused on testing an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) machine, which measures the change in blood oxygen levels in the brain as tasks are performed. However, if you’d rather read an interesting publication about the study rather than the original paper, I would recommend this link.

New Minimum Wage in Arizona

At the start of the new year, Arizona released a new law and regulation regarding the minimum wage upgrade to the state. The minimum wage in Arizona was raised from $12.80 to $13.85 starting January 2023. Over half of the states in the country have raised their minimum wage due to the increase in the price of basic needs. Arizona Minimum Wage in 2023

Two reasons states voted to increase the minimum wage were to help lower poverty and benefit minimum wage workers. Due to the increases in prices for many basic needs, many people were not earning enough to afford these. New Arizona Laws for 2023

There are also other cities in Arizona that increased their minimum wage even more than $13.35. For example, Flagstaff increased their wage to $16.80. Their minimum wage is higher than Arizona’s due to how high their housing prices are. Flagstaff’s minimum wage set to increase to $16.80

MH370 – Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 satellite communications - Wikipedia

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was an international flight that was operated by Malaysia Airlines. Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished on March 8th, 2014, while it was en route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Southern Malaysia to Beijing Capital International Airport in China.

As the plane was en route to China, the aircraft lost radar and radio signals over the South China Sea around 40 minutes into the trip. There were 227 passengers and 12 crew members aboard the Boeing 777 when it disappeared. Every individual aboard the aircraft was presumed dead, with zero survivors. The disappearance of Flight 370 was the most fatal incident involving a Boeing 777, as well as one of the deadliest incidents in the history of Malaysia Airlines.

A new Netflix documentary series surfaced at the beginning of March 2023 in regards to this incident: MH370: The Plane That Disappeared. According to audience reviews, the documentary is disappointing and unrealistic, including excessive conspiracy theories, and a lack of scientific and investigative approaches. Additionally, there have been concerns for the families of the victims, and viewers state that the documentary series presents itself as insensitive and callous.

Doomscrolling and Negative Media

It seems like social media has penetrated every part of life. On one side of the coin, accomplishments and milestones are celebrated with a cute picture with a witty caption on social media. On the other side, extreme lows and boredom prompt people to find relief in mindless media. Doomscrolling is a term that has recently emerged to describe a state in which someone gets trapped in an internet rabbit hole of bad news. Benjamin Johnson, a professor at the University of Florida, believes doomscrolling is a response to seeing bad news. The need to know more about an anxiety inducing situation leads people to seek out information that will alleviate their fears. This condition is exacerbated by algorithms which push negative and polarizing content to keep users on their apps.

How to Prevent Doomscrolling:

There are many ways to stop doomscrolling. Getting out of your social media rabbit hole will improve mental health and the quality of content you see online.

Limit your time on social media with a timer or an app.

Stay mindful about what you consume.

Find things to do offline.

Replace negative content with positive content.
